Unique edition of De Vrienden Van Amstel 2021 – EMG was there!

For the first time in its 23-year existence De Vrienden van Amstel LIVE only opened its doors digitally via a free livestream. Twenty great Dutch artists did not let the coronavirus keep them from treating the Dutch audience to a gesture of musical support.

In January 2021, over 1.7 million people were able to have a great time in the biggest online bar in the Netherlands. This wave of fun and appreciation was shared - mostly on social media - from several different countries in the world using the hashtags #vriendenvanamstel, #vval and #vvals. Large numbers of viewers ended up dancing in their living rooms.

On behalf of Fast Forward Amsterdam and Tribe Company, EMG arranged the technical side of this livestream. During the preparations, what was supposed to be a small-scale livestream on the De Vrienden van Amstel LIVE platform - after growing interest from audience – grew into the complete multicam configuration that people have come to expect from us during proper concerts. It was a great challenge, since the organisation wanted a high-quality production, while corona measures meant there were limits imposed on the number of people and facilities on the production floor.

Living room vibe

Obviously, a livestream is never going to be anything like being in a sold-out concert venue with audience interaction. Still, Fast Forward Amsterdam and Tribe Company managed to create a memorable show from a completely empty room. Cooperation with the artists, as well as parties handling the staging, lighting and cameras, was essential to give the people at home the desired living room vibe.

As per the client’s request, the production van was replaced with ENG cameras. Six Sony F55 Big sensor cameras were used for a ‘cinematic look and feel’ while four Sony Fs5 cameras took care of the effect shots. Using our own Redboxes*, these cameras were connected to a modular mobile production unit. This way, we were able to realize a multicam configuration even with the ENG cameras. It also allowed for a flexible and multi-disciplinary use of only a few people, personal contact and close contact with the production team, which was required under these unusual circumstances.

**The Redbox is a camera connection system, a device that, within a studio configuration, transports camera signals – like audio and video – to and from the production team. Using this connection system, several signals can be transported bidirectionally via fibreoptic cable. The device is stored in a red plastic box that can be easily clicked onto the back of the camera.

Growing demand for costumized solutions

For years, EMG ENG has been the go-to party for such specialized custom solutions. A connected ENG production seems very similar to the current multicam services that EMG offers. But there is a difference in the procedures and the way the cameras are held. The programme format, budget and necessary flexibility require a unique and, more importantly, personal approach in which EMG cooperates with the client to offer a fitting solution.
