Remote editor: "Very clear and user-friendly"

25 November 2024

Thanks to the remote editor, a tool from the Butlers platform, you can now edit from any location. You’re no longer tied to working in an edit suite. This applies to both multi-camera and ENG productions, saving both time and costs. Guido van de Walle, responsible for post-production at EMG, shares more about this tool.

For example, remote editing is very useful for rough cuts or creating timelines. "Imagine you’re stuck in traffic. Normally, you’d arrive at the office one or two hours later. How convenient is it to work from home! If you have the necessary equipment, you can connect to our infrastructure. If not, you can rent a compact kit from us, which allows you to work from any location," Guido explains.

Even more benefits

Guido highlights further advantages: "With remote editing, just like in a physical edit suite, you can receive first-line support from the media center. You don’t have to rent a remote editing set for a long period either; it’s available for as little as one day. It doesn’t matter whether you’re working with Avid or Adobe Premiere. Internet speed is no longer an issue. Additionally, the extra 'remote producer' module allows reporters and editors to view the same timeline together, even if they’re not physically in the same room."

Also for the producer

When you log into the Butlers platform, you’ll see an interface tailored to your role. For an editor, this is the editing section. Within this application, they can independently upload music or footage without involving the media center. A producer, however, sees more than just the editing section. If they have three editors working on a project, they can drop in to check on any of them. The editor receives a notification and can grant permission. "Very clear, user-friendly, and no technical fuss required," says Guido.

Eco-friendly

A wide variety of production companies for all types of programs are now using the remote editor and remote producer. Guido adds, "Whether it’s entertainment or reality, no matter how complex the program is, remote working is possible." Clients who work in Amsterdam but have their editing done by EMG can also remotely monitor the editing process thanks to these sets. "We’re meeting the need to reduce commuting, and that’s also environmentally friendly."

Freedom and flexibility

Guido concludes, "One of our editors has been working long days recently, but he was able to do it from home. He told me how nice it was to occasionally have dinner with his family and put his kids to bed himself. After reading one last book, he’d feel re-energized and could continue working. Remote editing has given him so much freedom and flexibility. I’m proud that we can offer that at EMG."
